How to play Snakes and Ladders

Choose a round of Snakes and Ladders and settle into its rules. Reach square 100 exactly. A roll past 100 leaves the token where it is. Look at what changes after your first action. Check the rule that explains your first action. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Read before acting

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Reach square 100 exactly. A roll past 100 leaves the token where it is. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Review the board or playing area as it changes.

Step by step

  1. Player 1 rolls first, starting before square 1.
  2. Move the number of squares shown by the die.
  3. Follow a snake or ladder when landing on its starting square.
  4. Alternate turns until one player reaches 100.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Check any mode label before starting.

A useful example

From square 98, rolling 2 wins. Rolling 3 overshoots and leaves the token at 98. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Keep the controls nearby.

Watch out for this

A roll of six does not grant an extra turn in this version. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
