How to play Peg Solitaire

Read the aim of Peg Solitaire, then make your first move. Leave a single peg on the English cross board. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Choose a comfortable screen position before beginning. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

English 33-hole cross; central starting gap; any final single peg wins.

Review a difficult moment

When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Leave a single peg on the English cross board. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Notice how the game responds to your input.

Step by step

  1. Select a peg and an empty hole two squares away.
  2. Jump horizontally or vertically over one peg, removing it.
  3. Plan so remaining pegs can still interact.
  4. Undo repairs a deadlock.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Look at the feedback after the action.

A useful example

Peg–peg–empty in one line permits one jump. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Read the matching step again.

Watch out for this

Diagonal jumps and pulling are not allowed. Read the feedback to see why an action did not have the expected result. Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart.
