How to play Word Deduction

Word Deduction gives you a focused activity to play in your browser. Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Read before acting

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Guess the five-letter answer in six attempts. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Notice how the game responds to your input.

Step by step

  1. Enter five letters.
  2. Green marks the correct position; gold marks an available copy elsewhere.
  3. Grey means no matching unused copy.
  4. Use the feedback to solve.

Controls

Type a guess and press Check guess or Enter. A careful first action helps you become familiar with the layout. Check any mode label before starting.

A useful example

An answer containing one E can award only one positive E mark in a guess containing two. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Notice the change in the playing area.

Watch out for this

Repeated letters do not imply unlimited copies in the answer. Compare the situation with the worked example. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.
